Retail Renovation Competition Winners

0575 Restaurant, a sumptuous new eatery in the Tuscan town of Sansepolcro, Italy, won overall honors in the VM+SD Retail Renovation Competition for 2006. The restaurant, designed by Bartolini/Lanzi Architects (Sansepolcro, Italy) is housed in a barrel-vaulted 1940s tobacco warehouse that most recently housed a clothing outlet before being converted into 0575.

Judges lauded the renovation for its detailing and use of elegant materials. “They took some risks, but also respected the existing structure,” one noted.

Other winners in the second annual renovation competition were:

• Full-line/specialty department store/specialty store, sales area over 10,000 square feet: Lane Crawford in Hong Kong, designed by Yabu Pushelberg (Toronto) and submitted by Lane Crawford (Hong Kong).

• Specialty store, sales area under 10,000 square feet: Z Gallerie store in Beverly Hills, Calif., designed and submitted by Herschman Architects (Cleveland).

• Supermarket: Gelson’s 17 store, in Santa Barbara, Calif., designed and submitted by King Retail Solutions (Eugene, Ore.).

• Service Retailer: Marine Max in Pompano Beach, Fla., designed and submitted by Pavlik Design Team (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.).

•Convenience Store: Z Market in North East, Md., designed and submitted by Miller Zell (Atlanta).

Winners in the competition will be profiled in the September issue of VM+SD, and representatives of winning projects will be invited to give a presentation at the magazine’s International Retail Design Conference, September 6-8, in San Francisco.
