Simply Mac (Salt Lake City), a chain of stores that resold Apple products, is no more after the company made an internal announcement saying it would shut down effectively immediately, MacRumors reports.
In the memo to employees obtained by MacRumors, Simply Mac CEO Rein Vogt said the company would file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy and terminate all workers.
Vogt blamed the pandemic and said Simply Mac’s financial performance “never met our expectations” since its parent company, Cool Holdings, acquired the business from GameStop in 2019.
Simply Mac will now shift to paying off its creditors, which could leave it without enough money to distribute final paychecks to employees.
According to multiple reports, employees said the announcement was sudden and without warning. “I wish they had just warned their employees ahead of time and had just been honest with everyone,” Taylor McCurdy told the KSL 5 TV station in Utah.
Simply Mac operated 53 stores, most of which were located in markets that lacked an Apple Store.
