Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (Bentonville, Ark.) reported that same-store sales rose just 3 percent in the crucial first week of December. The world's largest retailer has forecast a 3-5 percent same-store sales gain for the holiday shopping month.

A company spokesman cited snowstorms during the week for kmeeping many people along the Eastern seaboard away from stores.
