Staples Closing 50 Stores

Staples Inc. (Framingham, Mass.) announced it will close 50 North American stores. These are in addition to the 242 locations the company has already closed over the past two years.

Fortune reports the chains’ fourth-quarter sales were disappointing with same-store sales falling 5 percent. Online sales only grew one percent.

Staples continues battling the FTC for approval of the company’s purchase of Boca Raton, Fla.-based competitor Office Depot Inc.
