The Stop & Shop Supermarket Co. (Quincy, Mass.) has announced the location of four former A&P supermarkets it's purchasing from The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. (Montvale, N.J.).
Two of the stores are located on Martha's Vineyard, Mass., and the others in Killingly, Conn., and Peterborough, N.H. The agreement is subject to regulatory approval.
Though Stop & Shop is New England's largest supermarket chain, with more than 330 outlets in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Rhode Island, “it does not currently operate stores in these areas,” said the retailer's senior vp Tony Colavolpe.
Stop & Shop is part of the Ahold USA (Chantilly, Va.) family of companies, which also includes Bi-Lo, Bruno's, Giant Food and Peapod. This acquisition follows Ahold's strategy, announced last November, of focusing on its core food businesses and reinforcing its position in leading markets by making smaller acquisitions.
