William May, the industry veteran who took the newly created position of executive vp and chief operating officer of Payless ShoeSource Inc. (Topeka, Kan.) in April, has left the company “for personal reasons.”

Prior to joining Payless ShoeSource, May was chief operating officer for Tween Brands Inc. (New Albany, Ohio). He also held senior positions at Flemings Cos., Gap and Nash Finch.
