The Day the Music Stopped

The Musicland Group Inc. (Minnetonka, Minn.) has announced it will close its 65-unit Media Play retail operation.

All stores will be liquidated.

“The chain has been unprofitable for a number of years,” said spokeswoman Laurie Bauer. “We've gone through two owners in the last five years and have tried very hard to turn that business around and obviously were unsuccessful.”

Musicland Group also operates the Sam Goody and Suncoast Motion Picture Co. chains. In 2003, the company was sold by Best Buy Co. Inc. (Richfield, Minn.) to the investment firm Sun Capital Partners Inc. (Boca Raton, Fla.).
