Walmart Opening General Stores at Getaway Outposts

Walmart (Bentonville, Ark.) and Getaway (New York) have announced plans to open “The General Store by Walmart” at select Getaway Outposts, according to a company press release, through the retailer’s new partnership.

Getaway is a wellness and health hospitality company that builds Outposts, a collection of small cabins, that are located within a 2-hour drive of major cities. Currently the brand operates 19 Outposts with more than 784 cabins outside of destinations like Austin, San Antonio, Houston, Kansas City, Washington, D.C., and many more.

Outposts are outfitted with “the comforts of home … Everything about the experience, from the location of the land to the design of the cabins and the lack of WiFi and cell service, is designed to help guests unplug from the stress of daily life, reset and embrace simple pleasures like nature and campfire,” reads the release.

Through this partnership, Walmart will be opening a “mini-retail experience” at several Outposts offering products like cameras, hiking gear, blankets and cookware – the idea being that guests won’t have to leave the site if they forget something at home. Small goods sourced from the surrounding local communities will also be available for visitors to purchase. Goods available through the General Store will also be listed on Walmart.com for guests to browse in advance of their visit.

The first General Store will open in Wimberley, Texas, this month. Through the end of the year, General Stores will be opening at other locations including Running Springs, Calif.; Osceola, Mo.; Moodus, Conn.; and Roscoe, N.Y.

Casey Schlaybaugh, VP, Brand Marketing, Walmart, says, “Walmart’s partnership with Getaway furthers our mission to help people live better no matter where they are … We are going beyond just saving people money by enabling guests to maximize Getaway’s experience and empowering them to spend more quality time with those who matter most.”
