Walmart (Bentonville, Ark.) announced that it plans to raise the wages of 100,000 hourly employees later this summer. Employees slated to receive these raises are those in leadership roles, such as department supervisors in apparel, automotive, electronics and deli departments.
The retailer also announced plans to add 8,000 additional department managers as it restructures its stores’ sales floors.
According to Women’s Wear Daily, these actions are efforts to lift morale among workers. A company spokesperson said, “We want to make Walmart a better place to work and better place to shop. That includes investing in wages, training and scheduling.”
The company expects that the wage increases will initially result in a loss in shares for the year.
