Wegmans to Open Massachusetts Store

Wegmans Food Markets plans to open a 138,000-square-foot store in Northborough, Mass., this month, becoming the largest grocery store in New England, according to the Boston Globe.

The space will feature a variety of specialty areas, including a cheese shop with 300 domestic and imported varieties, and Mediterranean and make-your-own trail mix bars.

The Rochester, N.Y.-based company says it took more than 15 years to break into the Massachusetts market because of tight real estate and competitors trying to keep out the chain.

Wegmans operates 78 stores in five states.
