Weiner's New Name

Weiner's Stores Inc. (Houston-based retail chain) was granted Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection recently, citing poor sales. In an effort to restructure, the 75-year-old family retailer announced it would change its name and expand its merchandise mix.

The new name, Weiner's Plus, coincides with a focus on selling more home products, including small appliances and furniture, bed and bath goods and housewares. Stores will also feature redesigned layouts to accommodate trendier apparel and a larger selection of children's wear.

The company foresees closing 44 poorly performing stores by Dec. 24, leaving 97 units in Southwestern urban markets.
