2021 PAVE Student Design Competition Winners Announced

(PRESS RELEASE) Hollywood, Fla. (November 17, 2021)— The Planning and Visual Education Partnership (PAVE) is pleased to announce the winners of the 2021 PAVE Student Design Competition – “Meet the Street” sponsored by CallisonRTKL. This annual competition is geared toward college-level students involved in retail planning, interior design, architecture, visual merchandising, branding, and similar programs.

The competition’s design challenge provides an excellent opportunity for students to obtain real-life retail design experience. “Meet the Street” challenged students to design a small-scale intervention/idea that can be incorporated into any community-oriented situation which might address an issue or enhance what may already be existing. Students were encouraged to explore and address the aspects of retail, scalability, materiality, technology, accessibility, and sustainability while designing their concepts.

For the first time ever, the Top 5 student-designed concepts are all being awarded $1,000 each. This year also marks the first time that this competition was open to both undergraduate and graduate college-level students, with participants representing 40 universities and colleges across 14 countries.

“This conceptual competition was based on how to create community through design. We were happy to see a truly international representation with many of the entries dealing with various topics such as innovative ideas of sustainability, accessibility, brand, human nature, and design flexibility – providing a visionary and inspirational point of view. We look forward to seeing more innovative design ideas for future PAVE competitions,” said Mark Mappala, Associate Professor at Bellevue College and PAVE’s Vice President of Education.

Utilizing a blind and virtual review process, three stages of judging took place from November 9-22nd. Participating as judges for the 2021 competition were representatives from the CallisonRTKL team as well as Retail Design professionals including past PAVE Student Design Competition winners, PAVE Rising Stars, and members of the PAVE Board.

“CallisonRTKL was happy to be the sponsor of the 2021 PAVE Student Design competition, which addressed creating a unique and flexible design that could be integrated into any community, promoting engagement for all. Thank you to PAVE for letting us be a part!” said Cindi Kato, Principal, Global Retail Practice Area at CallisonRTKL and PAVE’s Immediate Past President.
