Zara Opens 50th Store in Japan

Landing in one of the world's leading shopping destinations, Zara Intl. Inc. (Arteixo, La Coruña, Spain) celebrated the opening of its 50th store in Japan last week. The new flagship is located in the Shibuya district and includes five floors and 16,145 square feet of retail space. The store façade was designed by the Zara Architecture Studio.

“This opening symbolizes the strategic importance Asian markets hold for the group and caps a year of growth in both Japan and other surrounding countries,” says Pablo Isla, first deputy chairman and ceo of parent company Inditex. “We will continue to grow significantly throughout this region.”

Zara, which is a subsidiary of Inditex, has opened stores in Tokyo and other cities throughout the country, including five locations in 2006, six in 2007, 11 in 2008 and 10 in 2009. The first Zara location opened in Japan in 1998.

The company says it’s targeting retail markets in Japan, China and Korea for expansion. The opening included the release of two exclusive products: a clutch bag and a pair of ballet flats coated in bronze glitter.
