Nordstrom reported a 1.4 percent increase in same-store sales for June 2001. It was an encouraging sign for the Seattle-based retailer that has not had many encouraging monthly or quarterly sales reports recently, especially at a time when so many other specialty retailers and department stores are reporting flat sales and sales decreases.
“We are pleased with the results of our June men's and women's half-yearly clearance events, particularly in light of the challenging retail environment,” said president Blake Nordstrom. “The women's sale generated a stronger response than the men's sale. Both events improved over last year and significantly drove our positive top-line results.”
Overall, the company reported preliminary sales of $529.7 million for the month of June 2001, an increase of 6.5 percent compared to sales of June 2000. Preliminary year-to-date sales increased 5.4 percent compared to 2000 year-to-date sales, but year-to-date same-store sales were still down 2.2 percent.
