Everyone loves a little moment in the spotlight, don’t they? Whether it’s receiving a distinguished professional award or a trophy from summer camp, such honors deserve a special place on our desk, home or hearts.

That idea was milked for laughs in a recent episode of “Modern Family,” where Mitchell and Cam end up in a fight after Mitchell brings home an award from the California State Bar Association. Seeing the award displayed on the couple’s mantel, Cam is inspired to showcase his fishing award from high school. When the couple starts fighting over whose award is more important – and which is the biggest – things turn a little sour. “This award has changed you,” Cam tells Mitchell, who eventually realizes he’s acting like a teenager.

We’d like to think vying for one of VMSD’s coveted awards will change you, too – in a good way.

For close to 20 years, VMSD has hosted the International Visual Competition, the industry’s only awards program dedicated to celebrating visual merchandising. Unlike store designs that last several years, visual merchandising displays have a limited shelf life, spending just a moment in the spotlight before the next campaign comes in to take its place. So, each year we gather entries from around the globe to showcase those visual programs that illustrate the freshest thinking in window displays, seasonal campaigns and in-store promotions, to name just a few of the competition categories.

But the red-carpet treatment doesn’t stop there. Seven years ago, VMSD introduced another industry first – the Retail Renovation Competition, honoring the year’s best renovation projects, from specialty and department stores to restaurants and grocery.

The list of past winners from both competitions represents the best in the industry – Macy’s, Niketown, The Body Shop, Holt Renfrew, Christian Dior, Starbucks.

The call for entries for both of these competitions officially kicked off at the start of 2012, with the deadline for the Visual Competition on February 22 and the Renovation Competition on April 16. The winners of these distinguished awards will be honored in the pages of VMSD magazine, online and at the VMSD International Retail Design Conference (held Sept. 5-7 in Chicago).

So what are you waiting for? Download an online entry form today. Just like Cam, we think you should be proud of your work.
