Bad News from Good Guys

The Good Guys Inc. (Brisbane, Calif.), the West Coast consumer electronics retailer, has announced it will fire 10 percent of its workforce and move the company headquarters to the East Bay of San Francisco, all in an attempt to reduce costs. The 450 job cuts are entirely in sales and sales-support, positions.

The company operates 80 stores, mostly in California (but also in Nevada, Oregon and Washington). It also operates several WOW! multimedia stores with music retailer Tower Records. It enjoyed a 6 percent sales growth in 2000. It has stopped selling computers in favor of higher-margin items, including home audio equipment, camcorders and personal digital assistants.
