Cadence Cycling & Multisport Center

Cadence Cycling’s road bikes aren’t just any ordinary gear. A typical Cadence cycle is priced at upwards of $15,000, which makes it a perfect accessory for TriBeCa, the upscale lower-Manhattan neighborhood of pricey real estate and expensive merchandise. But Cadence does more than sell bikes. Within the company’s 10,200-square-foot loft-style building are top-notch training facilities for athletes, including a pool and weight room. The challenge was uniting these core aspects in an atmosphere that reflected Cadence’s high-end surroundings. “The idea was to create an environment that combined the retail, training and social aspects of performance sports,” says Alec Zaballero, the retail managing director and principal at TPG Architecture (New York), the firm in charge of the design. TriBeCa is known for its cast-iron architecture and old brick buildings. TPG preserved the space’s original wood plank flooring, exposed brick and cast-iron columns and added decorative pendant lighting and floor lamps for an upscale feel. The shop is organized into a series of spaces: a retail area with custom fixtures, a “bike fit” training room with computers that customize bikes to riders’ needs and a lounge area where everyone can socialize and talk about the next Iron Man competition.
