Costco Down Under

Costco Wholesale Corp. (Issaquah, Was.) has revealed plans to open its first store in Australia, in 2009.

Chairman Jeffrey Brotman announced the intentions at the company’s annual shareholders meeting last week. Executive vp and cfo Richard Galanti later confirmed that the price club discounter is searching for sites in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne. And ceo Jim Sinegal confirmed the 531-store chain plans to open 29 new locations this year.
