Dollar General Plans California Debut

Dollar General Corp. (Goodlettsville, Tenn.) will open its first stores in California in 2012. The news follows the discount retailer’s expansion in other western states, including Arizona and Colorado in recent years.

“Our California stores will mark a significant milestone for Dollar General, giving us a coast-to-coast presence for the first time,” says Rick Dreiling, chairman and ceo.

The company has nearly doubled its store base in the last decade from 5000 in 2000 to more than 9500 today. In 2011, Dollar General will enter the Connecticut, Nevada and New Hampshire markets with new stores.
