On the Edge, Part VIII

International Visual Competition First Place: Non-Holiday Window Display
Bergdorf Goodman, New York
“Great Moments in Literature”
David Hoey, sr. director, visual presentation

Every retailer wants to tell a story these days. Fewer retailers are basing their decor on actual stories. Bergdorf’s book-based windows did just that, with each display illustrating characters or themes from a famous novel.

The works included Kafka’s The Metamorphosis, Kipling’s The Jungle Book, Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities, Orwell’s Animal Farm, and Proust’s In Search of Lost Time. Each window was executed in a different style to match the authors’ works, incorporating custom paper sculptures, Italian mosaic murals with relief elements, specially commissioned illustrations and mixed-media sculptures.

Judges said the windows skillfully merchandised clothing, even amidst their fanciful settings. “Like the Punk project, the conversation here carries on,” Fitch's Michael Brindley says, referencing the stories that stay with us, whether prompted by text on a page or a dress in a window.
