Management Changes:


ShopKo Stores Inc. (Green Bay, Wis., retail operator) has named Paul Ihlenfeldt as director of space management for the company's 141-store ShopKo division. Ihlenfeldt, who joined the company in 1984, will be responsible for all merchandise presentations.

Junckers Hardwood Inc. (Anaheim, Calif., hardwood flooring manufacturer) has promoted commercial sales specialists Karen Gerdes to cover Northern California and Margaret Redmond to handle sales in Southern California.

Nova Lighting (Huntington Park, Calif., lighting designer and manufacturer) has appointed Laurie Williams national sales manager, responsible for overseeing the firm's national sales force and expanding its marketing and merchandising programs.

Rockwell Group (New York architecture firm) has hired Henry Myerberg as principal. Myerberg, previously a founding principal of Helfand Myerberg Guggenheimer and Henry Myerberg architects, will handle architecture work for institutional, cultural and commercial projects.

Big Red Rooster Inc. (Columbus, Ohio, branding consultancy) has added Russ Branaghan as senior vp and head of consumer behavior group. Branaghan, who was previously principal at Lextant Corp., is responsible for helping clients understand consumer behavior.

Ambrosi (Chicago advertising and marketing agency) has hired Joel Machak as vp, executive creative director for the firm and its ABD Group, which handles its Sears, Roebuck & Co. business. Machak was previously group creative director and senior vp at Publicis.


Mergers/Acquisitions:


LSI Industries Inc. (North Canton, Ohio, integrated design, engineering and manufacturing company) has merged its three graphic operations into one company, LSI Graphic Solutions Plus.

Business Briefs:


VM+SD has begun taking registrations for its 2003 International Retail Design Conference, which runs Sept. 17-19 in Miami Beach, at web site www.irdconline.com. Attendees who register by July 18 can receive a $100 early-bird discount toward the full registration fee. Session descriptions, speakers and travel information are also listed on the web site.

Mothers Work Inc. (Philadelphia maternity apparel retailer) has entered into a licensing program with The Joester Loria Group (New York licensing and marketing agency). Joester Loria will manage the development and introduction of licensing initiatives for the maternity retailer, which will focus on products geared toward expectant families.

Airstar Space Lighting (Los Angeles lighting balloon manufacturer and designer) has changed its name to Airstar America, to reflect its commitment to the American market. Also, company president Benoit Beylier will move from France to America to oversee the firm's five-year growth plan.

Martin Professional (Aarhus, Denmark, manufacturer of lighting equipment, speaker systems and Gem smoke machines) has created a new address for the company's international web site, at www.martin.com.

The Society of Environmental Graphic Design (SEGD, Washington, D.C., non-profit educational organization) is presenting a three-part installation entitled “Off the Wall,” showcasing projects from SEGD members and other designers around the world. Awards & Competitions:


Kroger Co. (Cincinnati grocery retailer) received a 2003 Access Award from the American Foundation for the Blind for its new store in the Cincinnati neighborhood of North College Hill. The store was designed to make shopping safer and more accessible for the blind or visually impaired with modifications such as wider aisles, lowered aisle markers and a cleared storefront for easier access.

Bernhard Woodwork Ltd. (Northbrook, Ill., custom architectural woodwork manufacturer) received a Vendor of Excellence Award from Target Corp.'s construction and property development divisions for its remodel of the fragrances and cosmetics areas of the Marshall Field's State Street store in Chicago.

Commerce Design Montreal, an initiative of the City of Montreal, has awarded jury grand prizes to 20 winning businesses for their contributions to the quality of urban life. Winning stores and boutiques were: Boutique Michel Brisson, Celadon, Clio Blue, Eccetera & co, Jean Coutu – cosmetics section, Kamkyl Urban Atelier, Boutique Lacoste, Les Touilleurs, Mimi & Coco, OZOC and Ports 1961.
