House to Investigate Amazon’s Labor Practices

House lawmakers launched an investigation into Amazon’s labor practices, CNBC reports.

The decision to probe the ecommerce giant comes after its handling of extreme weather events that impacted employees, including a tornado that resulted in a deadly warehouse collapse in Illinois.

According to the article, the House Oversight Committee is demanding documents related to the tragedy, which saw six workers killed as they sought cover in a bathroom.

Warehouse employees alleged they were not allowed to leave the warehouse prior to the tornado, saying they were “threatened by their supervisors with termination or other adverse employment consequences,” lawmakers wrote. There were about 100 workers inside the warehouse at the time of the event.
