J.C. Penney Opens Five Stores

New locales include retailer's first in Manhattan

J.C. Penney (Plano, Texas) is opening its first-ever store in Manhattan today, along with four other stores in other parts of the country. Slated to take part in opening ceremonies for the two-level, 153,000-square-foot store at 33rd Street and 6th Avenue in New York were mayor Michael Bloomberg and J.C. Penney chairman and ceo Myron E. (Mike) Ullman III.

“After 107 years in business, opening our first Manhattan store is a milestone for J.C. Penney and a symbol of our progress in becoming the department store of choice for the moderate-price customer,” Ullman said in a statement. “With a great location in one of the busiest shopping districts in America, this store will be a showcase for the stepped-up style, outstanding quality, affordable prices and exceptional service that sets J.C. Penney apart. We look forward to building on the great success we have had in the New York metro area and becoming part of the local community.”

The other stores being opened by Penney are in Hiram, Ga.; Lee’s Summit, Mo.; Fairview, Texas; and Pleasant Prairie, Wis.
