Juxtapose, a new division of Duluth, Minnesota-based Maurices Inc., was created with Echo-Boomers in mind. Four new Juxtapose prototypes (designed by Mansour Design, New York City) are more like clubs, with their juice bars and lounge areas, theatrical lighting and psychedelic ambiance. Sophisticated sound and light systems are coordinated with in-store videos projected onto jagged-edged screens that seem to float overhead. Customers can check out their horoscopes or preview movies and videos on interactive kiosks, and the merchandise is a brand-tasmagoria of hot labels appealing to the late teen and young adult set.

The four new prototypes are in Minneapolis, Seattle, Portland and Milwaukee. Photography: Andrew Bordwin, New York City
