Kohl's Department Stores (Menomonee Falls, Wis.), the retailer on the upswing the past several months while so many others have faltered, will open 12 new stores on a single day in the Houston area later this week.
The new Houston-area stores are part of a carefully planned expansion strategy. Nationally, Kohl's sales have increased at a compounded annual growth rate of 25 percent, from $3.1 billion in 1997 to over $7.5 billion in 2001. With the new openings, the retailer of moderately priced national brand apparel, shoes, accessories and home products will have 394 stores in 29 states.
“Kohl's expansion into Houston marks an exciting new chapter for the company,” said ceo R. Lawrence Montgomery. “The area has high growth potential and a strong concentration of families with children, making it a perfect match for Kohl's innovative concept of a family-oriented store that offers a convenient shopping experience.”
