Kohl’s Plans to Grow

Kohl’s Corp. (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) has said it plans to open five new stores in Utah come mid-October.

“The 25-40 age group, with families, is pretty much our target audience,” said regional manager Dave Eske. The stores will be in West Valley City, West Jordan, Layton, Draper and American Fork. Each store will cover 88,600 square feet, offering women’s, men’s and children’s clothing, shoes, accessories and home products sections.

“We believe Utahns will be pleased with our emphasis on brands, values and convenience,” Eske said. “And we’re very promotional, so they will probably see more sales events than they have been used to seeing in the past.”

The department store retailer also announced plans for two more locations in Orange County, Calif., this fall. The new stores are in Yorba Linda (a former Home Depot location) and in Santa Ana (previously a Montgomery Wards store). Last year, the Wisconsin company moved into Southern California, opening 28 stores in one day, including eight in Orange County.

And it has paid $1.94 million for vacant land in Lancaster, N.Y., where it plans to open the first of three stores in the Buffalo, N.Y., area. Kohl’s said it has its building permits in place and construction is expected to being as soon as weather permits. The stores are expected to open in early 2005. The other two locations are on Niagara Falls Boulevard in Amherst, N.Y., and in the Quaker Crossing shopping center in Orchard Park, N.Y.

Each of the buildings will be around 96,000 square feet with about 88,000 square feet for retail shopping.

The company said it will open 95 stores this year.
