Target (Minneapolis) and Dutch designer Tord Boontje have collaborated on “Bright Nights,” which transforms New York’s Union Square Park footpath into an interactive lighting experience. Through the use of cutting-edge technologies, Boontje’s signature forest creatures and iconic seasonal designs “play” with visitors – moving toward them, darting, spinning and even floating away.
“My inspiration for Bright Nights was a desire to awaken the senses and bring wonder and fantasy to many this holiday season,” said Boontje. “By partnering with Target, I had the opportunity to design a never-before-seen lighting installation that, while technically advanced, is also emotional and memorable. My vision for building a winter wonderland in New York City has been brought to life.”
The display is free and open to the public through December 26. It is open nightly until 11 p.m.
Target and Boontje have also partnered to create Studio Tord Boontje for Target, a product collection in stores and at Target.com that represents a contemporary interpretation of holiday design. Boontje also became the first Target designer partner to create the in-store environment, marketing, advertising and product packaging for a seasonal campaign.
“Tord is known for combining artisan techniques with advanced technologies and this brilliant combination is what makes ‘Bright Nights’ so extraordinary,” said John Remington, Target’s vp, marketing. “We hope this collaboration, and the transformation of Union Square Park, would truly bring holiday cheer to New York and its visitors.”
