Gone are the days of oversized T-shirts and cut-off sweat pants as acceptable attire for the gym, a fitness class or even a jog around the block. Today's active woman can be seen in name-brand attire that is not only functional, but fashionable as well.

lucy, a Portland-Ore.-based company with more than a dozen stores, sought a new store concept that would establish itself as a purveyor of such stylish athletic wear, as well as support the company's plans for future growth. The retailer, which carries its own label as well as well-known athletic brands, worked with Big Red Rooster, a Columbus, Ohio-based think tank consultancy, to create a “style meets sport” concept at the La Encantada Mall in Tucson, Ariz.

Using vibrant colors, including shades of orange and green, and oversized graphics, the retailer draws attention to the diversity, individuality and strength of its target shopper. Orange is also used to create an eye-catching storefront.

Inside, a simple fixturing system of various woods and stainless steel keeps the focus on the product, which is divided into categories such as workout basics and support.

“The new store design allows us to communicate who we are and what we believe in,” says lucy founder Sue Levin.
