Macy’s Reports Holiday Sales

Macy's Inc. (Cincinnati) reported total sales of $4.619 billion for the five weeks ended Jan. 1, 2011, an increase of 4.5 percent compared with the same period last year. Same-store sales grew 3.9 percent in December. For the total holiday season, which combines same-store sales for November and December, the department store retailer saw sales grow 4.6 percent.

“Sales in December were strong at both Macy's and Bloomingdale's, consistent with our high expectations, despite snowstorms that disrupted after-Christmas shopping along the East Coast,” says Terry Lundgren, chairman, president and ceo of Macy's Inc. “While value remains important to customers in this uncertain economic environment, fashion, newness and unique gift items were drivers of our business throughout this holiday season.”

For the year to date, Macy's reports sales totaled $23.695 billion, up 6.6 percent from total sales in the first 48 weeks of fiscal 2009. On a same-store basis, Macy's, Inc.'s year-to-date sales were up 4.7 percent.
Online sales increased 28.4 percent in December, and 28.8 percent in 2010 year-to-date, compared with the same periods in 2009.

Macy's operates about 850 department stores in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Guam and Puerto Rico under the names of Macy's and Bloomingdale's.
