Macy's Heralds Its New Men's Department

Macy's New York has completed the renovation of its men's department in the Herald Square store after three years and several millions of dollars of work. Now the men's department, which began as a 98,000-square-foot, four-level area, occupies 180,000 square feet on five floors.

The reconstruction is one of many at Macy's Herald Square in the past five years. A total of $150 million has been spent on renovating various portions of the million-square-foot store. It already accumulates sales of more than $550 million a year. Men's alone produces $120 million today, but according to Kevin Morrissey, executive vp of Macy's East, that number should increase by 6 percent in the next two years.

The new men's section houses 7000 suits and 6000 sport coats on the third floor, once a women's ready-to-wear department. The shoe section now spans 7000 feet. The second floor is home to the sportswear collection, where vendor shops like Polo and Tommy Hilfiger have been updated. And the mezzanine level, once considered a “dead floor,” was made more contemporary for young men's and denim merchandise. The main floor, which was the last to be completed, offers basic knits and accessories, and the lower level is devoted to MacySport. On all the floors except the basement, Macy's opened up windows to allow in natural light.

Federated Department Stores (Cincinnati), Macy's parent organization, has been devoting considerable attention to menswear departments in its stores. It also recently completed the renovation of the four-floor area in its Rich's Lenox Square store in Atlanta.
