Meijer's Kind of Town

Feeling the weight of competition from other supercenter operators, specifically Wal-Mart, Meijer (Grand Rapids, Mich.) opened a new 215,000-square-foot supercenter in Aurora, Ill. It's the retailer's fourth store in Illinois and the first of four new stores Meijer intends to open in the general Chicago area. One in St. Charles, Ill., will open this month, and two others are slated for 2001 openings in as-yet-unspecified sites. A fifth Illinois new store, in Lisle, has been put on hold.
