On Our Radar: Previte’s Marketplace, Hanover, Mass.

FAMILY-OWNED GROCERY Previte’s Marketplace recently launched its first satellite location in Hanover, Mass., nearby its main flagship location in Weymouth, Mass., using a mix of reclaimed wood for its expansive interior. Aiming for the aesthetic of a large European marketplace, the location features an open floor plan highlighted by giant, reclaimed timber beams derived from an aged barn originally located on the build site. Additional reclaimed wood, like the rich paneling on the store’s interior and its eye-catching exterior siding, was used to complement the existing vintage timbers.

“The original existing timber barn structure on the site was re-used on this project, but it was positioned perpendicular to where it is now in the final building. The timber barn was somewhat recently used as a hardware store, but preceding that it was part of an old, turn-of-the-century train depot adjacent to a now long-gone railroad track line to one side of the building,” says Arthur Love IV, an Associate Architect with the firm charged with the space’s design, Bechtel Frank Erickson Architects (Lexington, Mass.).

“The building had been reclad numerous times over the years, but the interior post and beam timber super-structure was completely original with large roof truss systems and greatly inspired the new design,” Arthur continues. “In partnership with the town of Hanover, we decided to incorporate this functional history of the building into the market to pay homage to the legacy of the building and set the tone for the character of the new project.”
