Marshall Field’s, the Chicago-based division of The May Department Store Co. (St. Louis), has announced plans to bring a new luxury rug collection to the Oriental Rug Gallery at its State Street flagship store.
Tapis Gallery, which opens on Wednesday, will feature the store’s most luxurious collection of rugs. Many of the Oriental rugs in this collection range from $5000 to $60,000.
Interior designer Jennifer Post will design a line of custom contemporary rugs for the gallery. “I am delighted to have the opportunity to design six custom rugs for the Tapis Gallery,” Post said. “Marshall Field’s Oriental Rug Gallery is truly legendary, and it has been both exciting and stimulating to work with such dedicated and professional partners.”
The gallery opening will be marked with a silent auction and cocktail reception. Post will design a rug for the winner of the silent auction, with proceeds benefiting Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Arts. The opening coincides with the beginning of Field’s Silk Road event, the company’s annual February Oriental rug sale.
“Marshall Field’s has been in the Oriental rug business since 1876, and our State Street store houses one of the largest Oriental Rug Gallery in any department store in the country,” said the retailer’s regional director, Ralph Hughes. “The new Tapis Gallery offers the best of the best in luxury rugs, giving guests the opportunity to view and purchase true works of art.”
