Super Saturday Shopping Traffic Down Over 2019

Shopper visits to retailers dropped 26.3 percent on so-called Super Saturday, or the Saturday before Christmas, when compared to 2019 figures, according to preliminary data from Sensormatic Solutions. Year-over-year traffic was up 19.4 percent, however, reports CNBC.

“Americans have shown that they will not let this get in their way of sort of getting back to normal as fast as they can,” said Peter McCall, senior manager of retail consulting, Sensormatic. “Super Saturday is a good example of that.”

The recent resurgence of Covid cases and the resulting lack of tourists have affected turnout this season. Super Saturday is seen as the second-busiest shopping day of the holidays, after Black Friday. Though smaller cities enjoyed improved traffic, shoppers were more hesitant to hit the stores in larger cities like New York, Chicago and San Francisco.
