Target Honored

P>CINCINNATI, OH – November 7, 2001 – VM+SD announced today that Target Stores, Minneapolis, MN, was named Retailer of the Year, 2001. The new award was presented at the first annual VM+SD International Retail Design Conference, October 28-31 at Disney's Contemporary Resort in Orlando. In honoring the retailer, VM+SD associate publisher Carole Winters and editor Steve Kaufman announced that the award would be called the VM+SD/Peter Glen Retailer of the Year Award, in memory of the VM+SD columnist, designer, motivational speaker, lecturer, and retail analyst who died suddenly on October 4, 2001.

“Our intention was not merely to honor the store with the best, most effective store design; or the store with the best, most effective visual presentation; or the store with the best, most effective marketing campaign,” said Kaufman. “Our intent was to honor the retailer that combined all of those attributes and more, and successfully. The common theme of what we all do here is 'design,'and we wanted to award the retailer that honored design and incorporated the values of design in all aspects of identifying, creating, and supporting its brand. That retailer is Target.”

Stated Kaufman, “Peter Glen came out of the world of design and greatly admired retailers that made design work for them. I believe he would be pleased to learn that, in his honor, VM+SD has chosen to call this annual award the VM+SD/Peter Glen Retailer of the Year Award.

Judy Bell, Corporate Manager, Innovation Team of Target commented, “We are greatly honored to receive this very significant award.”

Full coverage of the first annual VM+SD International Retail Design Conference will appear in the magazine's December 2001 and February 2002 issues and on its web site, vmsd.com (www.vmsd.com). The 2002 event is slated for September 18-21 in Pasadena, CA.
