The current snapshot of the store fixture industry captures a business in a state of flux. According to proprietary research by industry analyst Steven Keith Platt (see “Business Watch,” VM+SD magazine, June 2003, page 12), the industry has tumbled 17 percent in two years. And we've seen a number of its biggest companies declare bankruptcy, close divisions, merge and consolidate. Two of the largest companies in the field – RHC/Spacemaster Corp. (Melrose Park, Ill.) and Oklahoma Fixture Co. (Tulsa, Okla.) – recently filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, which frees them from the threat of creditors' lawsuits while they reorganize their finances.
The Top 50 Fixture Manufacturers list on the following pages is based on 2002 fixture sales reported by businesses that responded to our survey. It contains 56 names this year – companies that reported sales of $15 million or more. The survey was sent to more than 1300 fixture manufacturers and suppliers, culled from the VM+SD Buyers' Guide, in-house databases and industry directories. All information presented on the following pages was provided by the companies. Businesses that did not report sales were not considered for the Top 50 rankings, but are part of the comprehensive alphabetical listing that appears starting on page 54. (That listing also includes a separate section of suppliers to the fixture manufacturing industry that replied to the survey.)
Though sales figures were used to gauge companies' rankings as fixture producers, VM+SD recognizes that market objectives are not always uniform and that size doesn't always determine a company's contribution to or impact on the industry. We also recognize that some large manufacturers did not respond to our survey.
