Walgreens (Deerfield, Ill.) reports September sales declined 7.8 percent to $5.48 billion, down from $5.94 billion for the same month in fiscal 2012.

Total front-end sales decreased 0.4 percent and comparable store front-end sales were down 1.5 percent. The drug and beauty retailer says customer traffic in comparable stores decreased 2.3 percent while basket size was up 0.8 percent.

Walgreens opened 15 stores during September, including two relocations. The company operates 8400 locations in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and Guam.
