For the second year in a row, judges of the 2000 ISP/VM SD International Store Design Competition gave Store of the Year honors to a retailer outside the U.S. This year, it went to David Jones'prototype redesign in Adelaide, Australia. Fred Robinson, competition chair for the Institute of Store Planners (ISP), said although selection of the top winner was difficult, ultimately the judges thought the department store's fresh design, by Robert Young Associates (Dallas), worked as a whole, and they liked its overall presentation — lighting, design and open floorplan.
The four-person jury convened last November in Los Angeles to pour over the nearly 170 entries in 17 categories. In addition to Store of the Year, judges selected 17 First Place awards, two Special Award winners and 37 Awards of Merit for a total of 55 stores honored.
Robinson says the competition received a remarkably international set of entries, more cyber-retail entries than ever before and many stores that featured grand staircases as an integral design element. Though the jurors took notice of architectural elements, Robinson says they focused primarily on the merchandise presentation.
Judges included Rebecca Van Eman, interior design consultant, Los Angeles; Shirley Litman, GD Moore & Co., Glendale, Calif.; Ed Sierra, WalkerGroup/CNI, Los Angeles; and Bob Semerau, Visual Accent Inc., Irvine, Calif. Ron Kline of Robinsons May, Los Angeles, and president of ISP, moderated the judging along with Carole Winters, associate publisher of VM SD.
