About 8000 workers at King Soopers and City Market stores in the Denver area are on strike, Reuters reports.
The workers are represented by the United Food & Commercial Workers union, which rejected what the Denver-based grocer called its “last, best and final offer” to replace an expired contract, according to the article. To keep stores open during the stoppage, King Soopers has hired temporary staff and is promoting online ordering.
The 8000 employees who have walked out make this the nation’s second-largest strike of the last two years, behind only the five-week strike by 10,000 workers at John Deere & Co, which ended in November.
The retailer has about 110 locations and is owned by Kroger, the nation’s largest grocery chain.
