After 15 years in business, Blockbuster has opened its 5000th U.S. store, in North Richland Hills, Texas (a few miles away from its first store). “The opening of our 5000th U.S. store means that we have a store within 10 minutes of 70 percent of the U.S. population,” says John Antioco, chairman and ceo since 1997. “It also makes us a truly global brand, with more than 7300 stores worldwide.”

As the company nears this milestone, it has also embarked on a number of strategic alliances to offerentertainment through a variety of technologies. That includes deals with DirecTV, provider of the nation's leading digital satellite television service and, more recently, an alliance with Enron Broadband Services to deliver movies on demand. The stated goal of alliances like these is to provide Blockbuster with multiple channels for home entertainment distribution. A new global advertising campaign was launched in May 2000 with the tagline “Bringing Entertainment Home.”

Blockbuster Inc. is a publicly traded subsidiary of Viacom Inc.
