Amazon Lockers Gone from RadioShack, Staples

Struggling retailers decide to stop helping the competition

Staples Inc. (Framingham, Mass.) and RadioShack Corp. (Fort Worth, Texas) have removed the Amazon lockers from their stores.

The chains began testing a system last year in which Amazon shoppers could have an order delivered to a store and then pick it up for no extra cost.

Staples said it ended the test with Amazon after it “didn’t meet the criteria we set up together,” according to Demos Parneros, president of North American stores and online for Staples.

RadioShack said it stopped the program because it didn’t fit with its strategy, according to spokesperson Merianne Roth. Bloomberg News said that new ceo Joe Magnacca, who took charge in February, is cutting items to reduce clutter in stores while improving displays to boost sales of major brands such as Apple.

But certainly part of the decision was based on the fact that Amazon.com Inc. (Seattle) and other online retailers have been undercutting the bricks-and-mortar retailers on price and selection and cutting into their market shares.

Sales at RadioShack have declined for the past six quarters, producing a net loss of more than $200 million. Revenue at Staples has slid in seven of the past eight quarters.
