American Apparel Inc. reports its comparable store sales were flat for the second quarter, ended June 30, 2011. On a month-by-month basis, comparable store sales were up 3 percent in June followed by a 4 percent increase in July.

Net sales for the clothing retailer were also flat, despite a 9 percent decrease in the number of stores in operation. During the 2011 second quarter, the Los Angeles-based fashion apparel company operated an average of 254 stores compared with an average of 280 stores during the second quarter last year.

“I believe that our stores look better than ever and our sales improvements were achieved at normal margins,” says Dov Charney, American Apparel’s chairman and ceo.
