Retailer to close an Elder-Beerman store, convert another to a furniture gallery; also names new head of stores

The Bon-Ton Stores Inc. (York, Pa.) has announced it will close an Elder-Beerman store in Morgantown, W. Va., and convert an Elder-Beerman store in Muskegon, Mich., into a furniture gallery under the Younkers nameplate.

Construction on the 52,000-square-foot gallery is expected to begin in March 2008, with completion scheduled for the end of July 2008.

Bon-Ton acquired the Elder-Beerman chain in 2003. Last year, it acquired the Bergner's, Herberger's, Younkers and Carson Pirie Scott operations from Saks Inc. (Birmingham, Ala.) The company currently operates 280 stores, including 10 furniture galleries, in 23 states in the Northeast, Midwest and upper Great Plains.

Bon-Ton also announced that Barbara Schrantz, currently senior vp, merchandise planning, will become executive vp for stores, effective Feb. 29, 2008. She replaces James Zamberlan, who is retiring.
