Calling the Whole Thing Off

You Say Tomato, new retailing concept from U.K., opens in San Francisco

You Say Tomato, a one-stop shop for all things British, has opened in San Francisco.

The dedicated British specialty store, offering a full range of groceries and frozen food imported from the U.K., is on California Street between Polk and Larkin.

Owner David Kidd, a U.K. native who has lived in the U.S., in New York and San Francisco, says he came up with the concept after experiencing “a challenging culinary quest of his own.”

“I figured I must not be the only Brit living here and finding it hard to buy all my favorites in one store,” he said. “Now we all have a complete line of British food to choose from — including crisps, pasties, pies, Irish and English sausage, Yorkshire pudding and more.”

The name of the store and its logo — depicting a Union Jack flag atop the Golden Gate Bridge — draw upon people’s familiarity with the famous opening line from the Gershwin song, “Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off.”
