Century 21 Sets Reopening of New York Flagship

Once-defunct discount retailer Century 21 said it will reopen its New York flagship store on May 16. “We are back! The opening you’ve been waiting for is here!” according to the store’s website.

The store, at 22 Cortlandt St., is expected to reopen with a total of 100,000 square feet of space on four floors, about half its former size, reports The TriBeca Trib.

Century 21, opened by the Gindi family in 1961, closed its 19 locations in 2020 and filed for bankruptcy for what it claimed was an unwillingness by insurers to pay for losses caused by the pandemic. The family later bought the business out of bankruptcy for $9 million and in February 2021 announced plans to reopen the New York store, the Trib reports.

It’s not currently known if the family plans any other openings for the famed name.
