Electronics retailer completes part of big store remodel and redesign program

As the first step in a three-year store remodeling program, Circuit City (Richmond, Va.) has completed partial remodels that expand merchandise selections, with the intent of making it easier for consumers to find and purchase holiday gifts. Since the retailer stopped selling appliances in June, that extra space has been retrofitted to accommodate such merchandise as video games (including hardware from all game manufacturers); expanded selections of computer software, accessories and peripherals; 35 mm cameras; more digital imaging products, including an increased assortment of digital cameras; and more telecommunications products. The new displays are today available in all stores.

The retailer also said it expects to complete its first full remodeling of 27 stores in the central and south Florida markets, and in Richmond, Va., prior to Thanksgiving. During November, 13 new stores will open and one will be relocated. The design of the full remodels, the new stores and the relocation is meant to offer a more flexible shopping experience for all consumers, according to Alan McCollough, president and ceo of Circuit City Stores, Inc.. “The new and fully remodeled stores will put more merchandise on the sales floor, plus shopping carts, Internet kiosks, additional cash registers, brighter lights and new colorschemes.” The company plans to fully remodel approximately 140 stores next year, relocate 10 to 15 stores and open approximately 25 stores that reflect this expanded shopping experience.
