December Retail Prices Dropped

Trend expected to continue in 2015

Retail prices fell in 2014 and the trend is expected to continue into this year. Consumers have responded well to discounts and lower prices on apparel, according to Women’s Wear Daily, but have also held back on spending because of sluggish income growth.

December’s U.S. apparel prices fell 1.2 percent, marking three consecutive months of decline. Overall, retail apparel prices fell 2 percent in 2014.

Michael Montgomery, an economist at IHS Global Insight (Englewood, Colo.), told WWD, “Apparel prices will probably reverse soon, but I think the squeeze is going to continue until there is a broad-based general feeling that the great recession is behind us.”
