Dick's Sporting Goods Inc. (Pittsburgh) has agreed to acquire Chick’s Sporting Goods Inc. (Covina, Calif.), a 15-unit chain in Southern California, for approximately $71 million.

Chick's stores average 50,000 square feet and generated over $120 million in sales during the year ended June 30, 2007. Two additional store leases have been signed and those stores will open as Dick's stores in 2008 and 2009.

“Chick's Sporting Goods is well positioned in several important Southern California markets,” said Dick’s chairman and ceo Edward Stack. “This acquisition provides the company with an immediate presence and market share in Southern California.”

Chick's aims much of its marketing at the California lifestyle customer, which includes beach and skate markets.

Dick’s currently operates about 300 stores in 35 states. It bought rival Galyan's Trading Co. in 2004 and Golf Galaxy in 2007.
