Dominick’s Shutting its Doors in Chicago

Safeway subsidiary will be empty by Saturday

Dominick’s Finer Foods Inc. (Oak Brook, Ill.) will be closing the last of its remaining stores by the end of the week.

Parent company Safeway Inc. (Pleasanton, Calif.) had announced earlier this year it was shutting down the money-losing operation altogether.

Only 74 units remain for the 95-year-old chain once considered the most innovative and pleasant places to shop in the Chicago area. Of those, 11 will be converted to Mariano’s stores, owned by Roundy’s Supermarkets Inc. (Milwaukee), which has bought the sites. Jewel-Osco (Itasca, Ill.), the 176-unit chain owned by Albertson’s Inc. (Boise, Idaho), has agreed to buy four more.

The remaining 59 Dominick’s stores will close on Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014, with no word on what may happen to them, according to a report by CBS News in Chicago.
