Drug Bust

Duane Reade Inc. (New York), the 250-unit drug store chain in the metropolitan New York City area, has named Richard Dreiling president and ceo. Dreiling, a former executive at Longs Drug Stores Corp. (Walnut Creek, Calif.), replaces Anthony Cuti, effective immediately.

Dreiling was executive vp and chief operating officer at Longs. He began his food-and-drug retailing career in 1969 as a part-time clerk with Safeway in Kansas. In 1998, he was named president of Vons, a Southern California food and drug division of Safeway.

Longs announced that president, chairman and ceo Warren Bryant would assume the responsibilities of chief operating officer, effective immediately, while it began a search for a new chief operating officer.
